🥣Main Ingredients

- Unsalted butter: Adds richness and structure, helping the frosting hold its shape and whip up fluffy.
- Powdered sugar: Sweetens while also thickening the frosting for stability. You can adjust this to reduce or increase the amount without affecting the texture too much. Adding a lot will make it too thick/too sweet though so taste test it little by little when adjusting sweetness level.
- Pure vanilla extract or paste: Enhances flavor and balances the tang of the cream cheese. You’re welcome to switch this flavor for another favorite extract.
- Cream cheese: Provides the signature tangy flavor and creamy texture, while also helping the frosting stay stable.
See recipe card below for ingredient measurements! This is for those that want a more in-depth idea of what each ingredient is and what they do. ٩(^ᗜ^ )و ´-
✨Step By Step Instructions
Step 1: Whip Butter
Whip butter until smooth with powdered sugar and vanilla extract.
Step 2: Add Cream Cheese
Then add softened cream cheese and mix until fluffy but don’t overmix so the frosting doesn’t become loose. Just enough that the cream cheese is incorporated once you’ve added it. Cover and store in the fridge and move on to making red velvet cupcakes.
Substitutions/Variations
Want to switch it up? Here are some variations and substitutions you can try✧ദ്ദി( ˶^ᗜ^˶ ):
- Unsalted butter: You can use salted butter, but reduce or skip any extra salt in the recipe. For a richer flavor, swap part of the butter with browned butter (just make sure it’s cooled before mixing).
- Vanilla extract/paste: Switch it up with almond extract, maple extract, or even citrus zest for different flavor profiles. Vanilla bean paste gives a more gourmet look with little specks.
✨Pro Tips
Here are some tips I learned from mistakes I made that I learned from to improve this recipe:
- Keep cakes frosted with cream cheese frosting chilled: Take them out 20–30 minutes before serving so the frosting softens just enough.
- Beat the butter first: Whipping butter until fluffy before adding cream cheese gives you a lighter, more stable base.
- Add powdered sugar gradually: This prevents lumps and helps you control sweetness and thickness.
- Don’t overbeat once the cream cheese goes in: Overmixing can cause the frosting to loosen. Mix until just smooth.
- Chill before using for decorating: If the frosting feels too soft to pipe or spread, pop it in the fridge for 15–20 minutes to firm it up.
🧁How To Store
In the fridge:
- Store cream cheese frosting in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
- Before using, let it sit at room temperature for 15–20 minutes, then mix gently to make it smooth again for frosting/piping.
In the freezer:
- Thaw overnight in the fridge. Before using, let it sit at room temperature for 15–20 minutes, then mix gently to make it smooth again for frosting/piping.
- Freeze in an airtight container (or portioned with plastic wrap) for up to 2 months.
⏲️Overwhelmed? Make Ahead!
Do you feel overwhelmed or have a busy schedule but still want to bake this recipe?! Here is a general idea of the work flow I would do as a professionally trained baker (with a degree in Baking & Pastry Arts) and years of experience in NYC bakeries to help you have more fun!⬇٩(^ᗜ^ )و ´-
(Spoiler (ᴗ͈ˬᴗ͈)ꕤ.゚: most bakes in professional kitchens/bakeries are broken down into steps for efficiency. We usually aren't measuring, mixing, baking EVERYTHING on the same day. Some components are prepped beforehand so don't feel bad if you feel like you aren't accomplishing what you'd like to in your baking journey, you just haven't figured out the right system yet! Let me help you with that~⋆˙♡)
You can combine any of the work days to suit your timeline. The idea is you really don't have to make everything in ONE DAY! My recipe card below is written in a way to make and bake this in one day for recipe structuring purposes (as well as reading or printing) but if I were to break up the baking steps for this recipe, this is what I would do:
˗ˏˋ ★ Day By Day Baking Steps For Cream Cheese Frosting ★ ˎˊ˗
Day 1: Prep Ingredients & Tools
- Double-check you have all ingredients. Measure them all out. Set up your tools.
Day 2: Make Frosting
- Take butter and cream cheese from the fridge to soften at room temperature about 30 minutes - 1 hour beforehand depending on how warm your kitchen is.
- Whip butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla until smooth and fluffy. Mix in cream cheese until incorporated.
Use frosting now as needed or store in the fridge/freezer following the storage instructions until you need it.
˗ˏˋ ★ ˎˊ˗ woohoo, you did it!!! ٩>ᴗ<)و I hope this was fun and it helped you become a more confident baker ˗ˏˋ ★ ˎˊ˗

Stabilized Cream Cheese Frosting
Ingredients
- 113 grams unsalted butter softened
- 70 grams powdered sugar
- 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract or paste
- 226 grams cream cheese softened
Instructions
Whip Butter Base:
- In a mixing bowl, beat softened 113 grams unsalted butter, 70 grams powdered sugar, and 1 tablespoon vanilla (if using) on medium-high until light and fluffy (2-3 mins).
- Tip: This step prevents overmixing later!
Add Cream Cheese:
- Mix in softened 226 grams cream cheese on low until just combined, then whip on medium-high for 30 seconds until fluffy. Stop once smooth, overmixing causes runny frosting!
Chill:
- For perfect piping frosting texture, refrigerate 20-30 mins before piping/spreading. Bake the red velvet cupcakes while waiting for cream cheese frosting to chill.
- When ready to frost/pipe, take cream cheese frosting out from fridge and let it warm up slightly (while covered) so it’s easier to frost. Make sure you only frost fully cooled cakes.
