There are cinnamon rolls, and then there are THESE Orange Cinnamon Rolls which use an enriched dough with milk, cream, egg, and a touch of butter to bake up incredibly soft and pillowy. The ones that make your whole kitchen smell like a citrus grove. This recipe is a weekender. Not because it's difficult (it's genuinely very approachable) but because you deserve to enjoy the steps peacefully. Make the dough, let it do its thing, roll out, fill, bake, and then absolutely drench the whole situation in orange cream glaze. I’ve included day by day steps as well so it’s not overwhelming!

🥄TOOLS YOU’LL NEED
- Stand mixer with dough hook and mixing bowl
- Measuring spoons/cups/kitchen scale
- Dough scraper
- Rolling pin
- Rubber spatula
- 2x Mixing bowls: 1 for cinnamon sugar, 1 for orange glaze
- Small knife or pizza cuter
- Baking pan & parchment paper
HOW TO MAKE (STEP-BY-STEP)

Step 1: Zest both oranges, keeping the zests separate. Then juice the oranges and set the juice aside for the glaze.

Step 2: Combine all dough ingredients in a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook. The dough will be slightly sticky; that's totally normal. Cover the bowl with a plate and let it ferment in a warm spot for 1 hour.

Step 3: Mix all the orange cinnamon filling ingredients together in a small bowl until combined. Set aside.

Step 4: Whisk together the orange juice, powdered sugar, and heavy cream in a small bowl until smooth. Set aside.

Step 5: Knead fermented dough briefly for about 1 minute. Cover and let it rest for 15 minutes so the gluten relaxes. Lightly flour your work surface and roll the dough out to roughly 11 by 12 inches.

Step 6: Spread the cinnamon filling evenly over the dough, leaving about a half inch border on all sides. Using a knife or pizza cutter, cut into 6 even strips. Roll each strip up individually into a coil, dusting off any excess flour as you go.

Step 7: Arrange the rolls in the prepared pan, cover, and let ferment for 30 to 40 minutes until noticeably puffy. (In a cool kitchen, this may take a bit longer.)

Step 8: Preheat your oven to 350 F without a fan, or 325 F with a fan. Bake the rolls for 20 to 25 minutes until golden on top and cooked through. Remove from the oven and let cool completely before glazing.

‼️PRO TIPS FOR SUCCESS
- The dry milk powder is optional but worth using if you have it; it adds a subtle richness and helps with browning.
- Don't rush the two fermentation windows. That first hour of rest is where all the flavor develops, and the second rise before baking is what gives you that fluffy, pull-apart texture. The window pane test (stretching a small piece of dough until it's thin and translucent without tearing) is your green light to stop mixing. Trust it!
- Use both zests intentionally: one for the dough itself (subtle, fragrant, woven into every bite) and one for the filling (boldly front and center). That double-orange approach is what makes these super orange-y!
- For the glaze, wait until the rolls are fully cooled before pouring. If they're still warm. I like a thinner consistency but if you’d like a thick glaze, you can add more powdered sugar.

👩🏻🍳RECIPE TESTING NOTES
What I tested:
- The first time I tested this recipe idea, I only had the zest in the cinnamon filling which was very tasty but I wanted EVEN MORE orange flavor haha so i decided to zest 2 oranges for the next test.
- I didn't use all the orange juice but it's fine because I drank the extra as a little chef's juice :) using it for the glaze for my next test because I figured I might as well use the juices as well. I think if I wanted to use the whole orange I would like to try candying the peels to decorate with as well.

❄️STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS
Room Temp
Keep your rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. They'll stay soft and pillowy if sealed well!
Fridge
Pop them in an airtight container and they'll keep in the fridge for up to 5 days. The rolls will firm up a bit when chilled, so warm them in the microwave for 15 to 20 seconds to bring back that fresh-baked softness.
Freezer
Wrap individual rolls tightly in plastic wrap, then place them in a freezer-safe bag or container. Freeze for up to 2 months. To enjoy, thaw overnight in the fridge or at room temperature for a couple of hours, then warm gently before serving.

Super Soft, Bakery-Style Orange Cinnamon Rolls With a Bright, Zesty Glaze
Ingredients
ORANGE CINNAMON ROLL DOUGH
- 1 zest orange
- 300 grams bread flour (all-purpose flour works too) more for dusting
- 50 grams granulated white sugar
- 2 ¼ teaspoons granulated instant yeast
- 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
- 2 tablespoons dry milk powder optional
- 160 grams whole milk room temperature
- 80 grams heavy whipping cream room temperature
- 1 large egg room temperature
CINNAMON FILLING
- 1 zest orange
- 150 grams brown sugar
- 50 grams unsalted butter
- ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
ORANGE CREAM GLAZE
- 50 grams orange juice
- 50 grams powdered sugar
- 50 grams heavy whipping cream
Instructions
Prep Your Oranges
- Zest both oranges, keeping the zest from each orange separate. One portion goes into the dough, the other into the filling.

- Juice the oranges and set the juice aside for the glaze.
For Orange Cinnamon Roll Dough
- Line your baking pan with parchment paper and set it aside.
- Add all the dough ingredients, including one portion of orange zest, into the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook.1 zest orange, 300 grams bread flour (all-purpose flour works too), 50 grams granulated white sugar, 2 ¼ teaspoons granulated instant yeast, 1 teaspoon fine sea salt, 2 tablespoons dry milk powder, 160 grams whole milk, 80 grams heavy whipping cream, 1 large egg
- Mix on low speed for 10 to 15 minutes. The dough is ready when you can pull a small piece and stretch it thin enough to see light through it without it tearing. This is the window pane test! Don't panic if the dough looks a little wet and sticky, that's exactly what you want.

- Remove the dough hook, cover the bowl with a plate, and let the dough ferment in a warm spot in your kitchen for 1 hour.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air and knead it briefly for about 1 minute. Cover again and let it rest for 15 minutes so the gluten can relax.
Cinnamon Filling
- Combine the brown sugar, salted butter, cinnamon, and remaining orange zest in a small bowl. Mix until well combined and set aside.1 zest orange, 150 grams brown sugar, 50 grams unsalted butter, ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt, 1 tablespoon cinnamon

Orange Cream Glaze
- Combine the orange juice, powdered sugar, and heavy whipping cream in a small bowl. Stir until smooth and set aside.50 grams orange juice, 50 grams powdered sugar, 50 grams heavy whipping cream

Assemble & Bake
- Lightly flour your work surface and turn the rested dough out onto it. Roll the dough into a rectangle roughly 11 by 12 inches.

- Spread the cinnamon filling evenly over the dough, leaving a ½” border around the edges so nothing spills out when you roll it up.

- Using a knife or pizza cutter, slice the dough lengthwise into 6 even strips.

- Roll each strip up snugly and brush off any excess flour before placing them into your prepared baking pan.

- Cover the pan and let the rolls ferment for 30 to 40 minutes. They should puff up noticeably. If your kitchen is on the cooler side, give them a little extra time.

- Preheat your oven to 350F without a fan, or 325F if using a fan setting.
- Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until the tops are golden and the rolls look set.

- Remove from the oven and let the rolls cool completely before pouring the orange cream glaze over the top. Patience pays off here!
