If you love coffee and want a fun, refreshing twist, Japanese Coffee Jelly is a must-try. This is smooth, jiggly dessert has a strong, aromatic bitter coffee flavor that's balanced with the sweet cream. Light for an after-noon pick me up and fancy enough to serve at a party.

Homemade coffee jelly is a popular, modern day, Japanese treat that I heard from an anime, although I don’t remember the exact one anymore. I heard that it’s Saiki’s favorite dessert though, haha!

🥣Main Ingredients

- Coffee: Coffee is the main ingredient, providing the bold, deliciously aromatic, bitter flavor that defines coffee jelly. You can customize its intensity by choosing your favorite coffee blend. Using instant coffee substitute will also work.
- Gelatin Powder: Gelatin is the key ingredient that gives coffee jelly its signature jiggly texture. It sets the coffee into a firm yet wobbly dessert (think jello).
- Condensed Milk: Instead of just sugar, I wanted to give the sweet cream an extra milky flavor sweetness by using condensed milk. It adds another rich and cream flavor to help balance the bitterness from the coffee jelly.
- Heavy Cream or Whole Milk: Heavy cream (or whole milk) adds creaminess to the dessert. It complements the coffee’s bitter boldness and creates a yummy, smooth contrast to the jelly's texture.
✨Step By Step Instructions
Coffee Jelly For Slicing

Step 1: Sprinkle unflavored gelatin
over measured water and leave it for 5 minutes while you prepare your strong coffee (all the gelatin should be hydrated). This is to make sure it melted evenly later.

Step 2: Mix the hydrated gelatin powder with the brewed coffee until the gelatin dissolves. If your mixture is not hot enough to dissolve the gelatin, microwave in 30 second increments on low until it dissolves. Let it cool at room temperature.

Step 3: Pour the cooled coffee mixture into your container for slicing. Chill in fridge for at least 2-3 hours until it’s set and slice-able or overnight.

Step 4: Mix together condensed milk, heavy cream, and milk.

Step 5: Scoop jelly into cup.

Step 6: Add cream.

Step 7 (optional): add whipped cream on top and cocoa powder.

Step 8: enjoy!
For Serving in Cups (starting from step 3 & 4 from above)

Alternative Step 3: Pour cooled coffee jelly mixture into serving cups and chill until jiggly.

Step 5: Pour sweet cream over on top. Garnish with whipped, sprinkles, and maraschino cherry on top if you'd like. Enjoy!!!
‼️Pro Tips
- Make sure to bloom the gelatin so it’s easier to fully dissolve it in the hot coffee. (make sure it’s also fully dissolved in the hot coffee) for the perfect, even jelly texture.

🔄Substitutions/Variations
- No gelatin powder? No problem. You can use agar agar powder instead.
- To make it vegan, you can switch the gelatin powder with agar agar powder instead.
As for the sweet cream, you can replace the condensed milk with a vegan condensed milk. Most of the time they're made from oat milk or coconut milk. The heavy cream can be substituted with a barista blend milk for a creamier texture but you can also go ahead and use all vegan based milk for both the cream and milk ratios. Nut milk, oat milk, or coconut milk would be great! Soy milk's flavor may not pair with the coffee flavor as well depending on the brand. - You can use tea instead. If you prefer tea over coffee, I've tried it with this coffee jelly recipe as well. You can definitely replace strongly brewed coffee with strongly brewed tea instead. This is an easy coffee jelly dessert that you can turn into a tea jelly as well. Just note that the acidity of your tea/coffee may break down the gelatin, so it's best serve the same day or next day if you use freshly brewed tea or coffee. Instant coffee should last longer or using agar agar powder instead.
- Skip the sweet cream and use your favorite sweetened coffee creamer instead.
- Experiment with flavored coffee like hazelnut, vanilla, or spiced blends for even more fun flavors.
- Get creative by layering it with other jellies, like milk jelly or fruity ones, for a colorful dessert.
- Top it off with fun extras like whipped cream, chocolate chips, sprinkles, maraschino cherries, or tapioca pearls to make it extra special.

❄️STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS
Room Temperature: Coffee jelly should not be at room temperature for longer than 30 minutes after assembled. Store in the fridge to keep everything nice and chilled.
In the Fridge: Store coffee jelly in an airtight container or cover it tightly with plastic wrap to prevent it from drying out. It will stay fresh for up to 3-4 days.
In the Freezer: Don’t freeze coffee jelly! The texture will become grainy or watery when thawed.
Pro Tip: If you're making coffee jelly ahead of time, prepare the sweet cream or toppings separately and assemble them just before serving for the freshest flavor!
✨How to Serve it
Make it in parfait glasses for a cute retro look or slice it into cubes as a topping for other treats like froyo or ice cream. You could also layer it in trifle cakes.
