🥣Main Ingredients

- Unsalted butter: Provides richness and keeps the cookies tender.
- Granulated white sugar: Sweetens the dough and helps the cookies spread.
- Egg: Binds the ingredients together and adds structure.
- All-purpose flour: The backbone of the cookie, giving it shape and bite.
- Malted milk powder: Adds a nutty, toasty flavor that makes the cookie taste nostalgic and bakery-style. It also aids in browning and slight spreading of the cookie. If you choose to omit this, just be aware that it may change the texture slightly.
- Baking powder and baking soda: Work together to lift and spread the cookies for the perfect soft-chewy texture.
- Salt: Balances the sweetness and enhances all the flavors.
- Wild blueberries (roasted): Intensifies their flavor and prevents the dough from becoming watery. Use blueberry jam instead if you want to try this recipe with less work commitment. Do try roasting your own blueberries in the future though for the experience ! :)
- Freshly squeezed lemon juice: Adds brightness and keeps the blueberry flavor fresh, not overly sweet. The acidity also helps with brightening the color of the blueberries.
See recipe card below for ingredient measurements! This is for those that want a more in-depth idea of what each ingredient is and what they do. ٩(^ᗜ^ )و ´-
✨Step By Step Instructions
Step 1: Roast the blueberries:
Toss wild blueberries with a little lemon juice and spread them on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Roast at 400°F for 10–12 minutes until they look jammy and slightly caramelized. Cool completely before adding to cookie dough.
Pro Tip: Make sure they’re fully cooled, or they’ll melt the butter in your dough.

Step 2: Mix dry ingredients:
Whisk together flour, sugar, malted milk powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Step 3: Add wet ingredients
Melt the unsalted butter and let it cool (but not solidify). Mix in the egg and cooled melted butter into the dry ingredients until just combined. Don’t overmix here, or your cookies may get tough.

Step 4: Fold in the blueberries:
Carefully layer/sandwich the cooled, roasted blueberries and cookie dough. Use a rubber spatula to fold very gently. You should be able to still see the jammy blueberries.
Pro Tip: Be gentle! Overmixing will turn your dough purple and you won’t get those jammy pockets.

create a cookie dough well and add spoonful of roasted blueberries evenly spaced.

gently fold cookie dough inwards to cover blueberries

gently press down to seal

add more roasted blueberries on top, evenly spread.
Step 5: Scoop, chill, and bake:
Scoop blueberry cookie dough balls (about 3 tablespoons each) onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Chill and then bake until the edges are lightly golden and the centers look just set. Let cool on the pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

‼️Pro Tips
Here are some tips I learned from mistakes I made so you can make this recipe perfectly!
- Bake with parchment, not directly on the pan. Blueberry sugars can bubble and caramelize, parchment makes cleanup way easier.
- Underbake slightly. Cookies continue to set as they cool. Pull them when the edges are golden but the centers still look a touch soft. This keeps the jam glossy and chewy instead of dry.
- Chill the dough well: Warm dough + juicy berries = spread city. A good chill firms things up and helps the cookies keep their shape.
- Don’t overmix once berries are in. Gently fold (unless you want streaks of purple, which can also be pretty!).
- For evenly sized cookies, use an ice cream scoop! This is my favorite way to portion out cookie dough so they’re nice and evenly baked.
- Want perfectly circular shaped cookies? Give them a shimmy! Use a circular cookie cutter, mason jar lid, heat safe mug/measuring cup to give your cookies a shimmy so that their edges are more evenly circular.
- Freeze your extra cookie dough! Having a cookie dough freezer stash is my secret weapon for late night cravings (who else loves a freshly baked cookie at 9pm??) and last-minute hosting guests/gifting! Pre-portioned dough means warm, freshly baked cookies are always 15 minutes away, no thawing needed. Will I bake them all at once? Probably…but I don’t see the problem :)
I've been using these stainless steel stackable containers. They aren't completely air tight but if you plan to only freeze for about a month, they should be okay without freezer burn. Each container should fit about 8x (1.5oz) scooped cookie doughs. To make it more airtight, use this press & seal before placing the lid on top to store the frozen cookie dough for up to 3 months. Until I find a better container, this is what I've been doing for now. Hope this helps. 💙✨
🔪Tools
- Cookie scoop (optional, but helps for even cookies)
- Baking sheet lined with parchment
- Mixing bowls (1 large, 1 medium)
- Hand mixer or stand mixer
- Spatula
- Measuring cups and spoons or kitchen scale
🍪How To Store/Freeze
For Baked Cookies:
- At room temperature, store cookies in an airtight container or resealable plastic bag. For soft cookies, place a slice of bread in the container to maintain moisture. Cookies stay fresh for 2-3 days. Because of the fresh fruit in these cookies, it’s better to eat them sooner than later to prevent molding especially in warmer/humid climates. Crisp cookies may last slightly longer but may lose some crunch over time. Store them in the fridge instead if your kitchen is humid/warm and take out 10-15 minutes to let it warm up before enjoying or toast it.
- In the freezer, place cooled cookies in a single layer on a baking sheet to freeze, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container. Separate layers with parchment paper if you'd like to help prevent them from sticking when freezing the cookies. Cookies remain fresh for up to 3 months. Let them sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes or reheat in a 300°F (150°C) oven for a few minutes to refresh the texture when thawing.
For Unbaked Cookie Dough:
- In the fridge, wrap dough tightly in plastic wrap or store in an airtight container. Dough can be refrigerated for 2-3 days before baking. Bake directly from fully chilled at 325 F / 163 C (with fan) or 350 F / 176 C (without fan) for about 12-16 minutes depending on your cookie texture preference.
- In the freezer, shape dough into balls and freeze on a baking sheet until solid. Transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container, removing excess air. Frozen dough lasts up to 3 months. Bake directly from frozen at 300 F (with fan) or 325 F / 176 C (without fan) for 14-16 minutes. I love freezing extra cookie dough whenever I make batches so I always have a freshly baked treat whenever I want :) If you want it to spread more, lower the temperature and bake a little longer.
⏲️Overwhelmed? Make Ahead!
Do you feel overwhelmed or have a busy schedule but still want to make this blueberry cookie recipe?! Here is a general idea of the work flow I would do as a professionally trained baker (with a degree in Baking & Pastry Arts) and years of experience in NYC bakeries to help you have more fun!⬇٩(^ᗜ^ )و ´-
(Spoiler (ᴗ͈ˬᴗ͈)ꕤ.゚: most bakes in professional kitchens/bakeries are broken down into steps for efficiency. We usually aren't measuring, mixing, baking EVERYTHING on the same day. Some components are prepped beforehand so don't feel bad if you feel like you aren't accomplishing what you'd like to in your baking journey, you just haven't figured out the right system yet! Let me help you with that~⋆˙♡)
You can combine any of the work days to suit your timeline. The idea is you really don't have to make everything in ONE DAY! My recipe card below is written in a way to make and bake this in one day for recipe structuring purposes (as well as reading or printing) but if I were to break up the baking steps for this recipe, this is what I would do:
˗ˏˋ ★ Day By Day Baking Steps For Blueberry Cookies ★ ˎˊ˗
Day 1: Prep & Roast
- Roast the blueberries
- Preheat the oven to 400°F.
- Cool completely, then transfer to the fridge.
- Gather and measure dry ingredients

- Mix cooled, melted butter and egg into dry ingredients.
- Fold in roasted blueberries gently so they don’t burst too much.
- Cover and chill dough for at least 30 minutes - 1 hour before scooping the portions out. Bake the same day after chilling, the next day, or freeze for another special day to enjoy.
Day 3: Bake
- Preheat the oven to 325°F (with fan) / 350°F (without fan) and line baking sheets with parchment.
- Portion blueberry cookie dough balls about 3 inches apart on baking sheet.
- Bake for 12–16 minutes, until edges are lightly golden but centers are still soft.
- Cool on the tray for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to finish cooling.
Day 4: Enjoy + Store

can you use fresh store bought blueberries for the jam/roasting or do they need to be frozen? going to use this recipe for some "blueberry muffin-cookies" with streusel to roll them in before baking!
Sharon Hsu says
Hi there!! oo good question! I've roasted strawberries frozen and fresh before so while I haven't tried this for blueberries yet, I assume that yes, you should be able to roast fresh blueberries! I would decrease the time though since they're fresh (to prevent burning) since they most likely won't need as much baking time. Someone else commented on a Youtube video I made of these cookies saying they used blueberry jam and that worked too. I think you can totally play around with it! I like to use frozen blueberries for the convenience :) recently I've been loving frozen wild blueberries!!!
blueberry muffin-cookies with streusel sound DELICIOUS!! I love the top of fresh baked muffins so that's what they remind me of, can't wait to hear about your baking adventure! hope i was able to help :D
